Box Office: 'Zootopia 2' Jumps to $6.2 Million, 'Ella McCay' Flops at the Box Office
The animated sequel 'Zootopia 2' dominated the North American box office this weekend, grossing $6.2 million on its third Friday, a 40% decline from the previous week. With an expected gross of $26 million by Sunday, 'Zootopia 2' is on track to become the fastest PG film to reach the billion-dollar milestone, achieving it in just 17 days. This impressive feat makes it the third movie in 2025 to surpass $1 billion, joining 'Lilo & Stitch' and China's 'Ne Zha 2'.
In second place, 'Five Nights at Freddy’s 2' earned $5.6 million on its second Friday, marking an 81% decline from its debut last week. Despite this, the film is projected to gross $20 million domestically, following a stellar $64 million opening last weekend.
However, newcomer 'Ella McCay', a political dramedy directed by James L. Brooks, struggled at the box office. The film, starring Emma Mackey, only grossed $850,000 in its debut from 2,500 North American theaters, falling short of projections of $4 million by Sunday. Brooks, known for his work on 'The Simpsons' and Oscar-winning films, helmed the project and wrote the script. 'Ella McCay' follows an aspiring politician's journey to balance her career and personal life after becoming governor, but it seems the audience wasn't quite ready for this political satire.
'Wicked: For Good' took third place with $2.2 million domestic on Friday, projected to gross $8.3 million by Sunday, bringing its North American total to $311 million. In fourth place, 'Dhurandhar', an Indian Hindi-language spy thriller, grossed an estimated $930,000 on Friday and is expected to gross $3.2 million by Sunday. Finally, 'Now You See Me: Now You Don’t', the third installment in the magical heist saga, pulled in $720,000 on Friday and is projected to gross $2.4 million by Sunday, accumulating a domestic total of $59.4 million.
