Unveiling the True Meaning of Being Well Endowed
In her insightful book, "Well Endowed," Vivian Tu, your trusted financial BFF, guides us on a journey to build wealth that resonates with our personal values, supports our loved ones, and grants us the precious gift of time.
When navigating the path to financial prosperity, most advice revolves around numbers: budgets, percentages, and balances. But what if we took a step back and asked ourselves a different question? What if we inquired, "Is this path truly aligned with the life I envision for myself?"
Vivian Tu, the renowned New York Times bestselling author of "Rich AF" and "Well Endowed: The Secrets to Strategic Spending, Building a Financial Foundation for You and Your Family, and Creating Lasting Generational Wealth," challenges us to rethink our approach. In a captivating episode of the HerMoney Podcast, Vivian joins Jean Chatzky to unravel the multifaceted meaning of a "well endowed" life, extending beyond mere financial prosperity.
"Well Endowed" - Unpacking the Concept
Jean Chatzky: Vivian, how did you land on the title, and how did you convince your publisher to embrace it?
Vivian Tu: You know, when I use the phrase "well endowed," some might interpret it as a playful joke, but it doesn't have to be. The term "endowment" refers to a pool of resources, a pot of money that can be invested and grow over time, ultimately supporting an organization's mission into the future.
I believe we all deserve to be well endowed, in the sense that we should have access to a reservoir of resources and wealth that can be invested, grow, and provide us with the life we desire, even after our time on earth has passed. Ideally, our financial prosperity would allow us to leave a legacy for those we hold dear.
Redefining Retirement with Vivian Tu
Jean Chatzky: Your recent move to Miami has exposed you to a vibrant community of retired women leading incredibly fulfilling lives. They're up with the sun, attending Pilates classes, walking, brunching, traveling, and enjoying social activities like bridge. You've mentioned that the term "retirement" is a misnomer, as these women are anything but tired. How has living among them shaped your vision of the future, and what kind of financial planning does such a life require?
Vivian Tu: When we hear the word "retirement," it's often associated with being put out to pasture, which I find quite distasteful. It implies an end, a cessation of work and life, with nothing but boredom and staying at home to look forward to. That's not the retirement I aspire to.
Observing these women, who lead more active social lives than I do, who exercise regularly, and who are emotionally and socially engaged, is inspiring. That's the retirement I envision for myself - a life where I can choose how to spend my time, travel, and embrace a new chapter, rather than an ending.
