Imagine this: Carlos Santana, the legendary guitar virtuoso, unknowingly tripping before a flight, thanks to a mischievous prank by none other than Jerry Garcia. This single moment encapsulates a fascinating duality in Santana's career.
For many, especially those who came of age in the 1990s, Santana is synonymous with the radio-friendly hits from Supernatural, like 'Smooth' and 'Maria Maria'. These tracks, with their catchy melodies, often get the crowd moving, while perhaps prompting some older fans to take a break.
But there's another side to Santana, a deeper dive into spiritual psychedelia, infused with the spirit of the '60s. This side reveals a rich tapestry of Latin rhythms, African trance beats, and a profound connection to the counterculture's embrace of altered states. Santana wielded his guitar like a siren, navigating the psychotropic landscape without ever becoming consumed by it.
But here's where it gets controversial... Drugs played a crucial role in Santana's creative process. He was an avid user of hallucinogens, and he found himself in good company when he arrived in New York for the Woodstock Festival, where he met Jerry Garcia. Garcia, known for his own psychedelic explorations, allegedly offered Santana and his band mescaline, suggesting they had a comfortable 12-hour wait before their performance.
Woodstock, as we know, was many things, but organized wasn't one of them. The 12-hour wait quickly evaporated, leaving Santana, already experiencing the effects of the drug, to perform an electrifying set before nearly half a million people. He described seeing his guitar writhe like a snake during the performance.
And this is the part most people miss... This wasn't Santana's first psychedelic experience courtesy of Garcia. The Grateful Dead frontman had already dosed Santana the previous year, during a concert in Las Vegas. Garcia, ever the prankster, had slipped something into Santana's Coca-Cola.
"What I didn’t know is, they knew how to put a syringe in the soda can,” Santana recalled in a 2019 interview with The New York Times. "So we played our set and left, and on the way from the airport to the plane, the hall kept getting longer and longer. The colours in the carpet and in the wall started oozing like lava. I said, ‘Uh oh, they got me.’ When I sat down on the plane, I looked out the window as we were taking off, and the Vegas lights looked like Aztec hieroglyphics. [Laughs] I said, ‘This is going to be intense.’”
Garcia himself was no stranger to the psychedelic experience. He debuted the Grateful Dead at Ken Kesey's infamous Acid Test parties, where LSD seemed to fuel his creativity as much as rock and roll did. The psychedelic experiences, it seems, gave Santana the fuel he needed for his electric Woodstock performance, and forged a cosmic bond between the two musicians, even if it was born out of a soda-can prank.
