Norman Wells Oil Operations to Shut Down: Imperial Oil's Decision (2026)

Imperial Oil has announced a significant decision: it will cease its oil operations in Norman Wells, marking the end of over a century of production at this historic site. This closure has been on the horizon since 2022, but until now, there wasn't a definitive timeline for when the shutdown would occur.

According to a recent press release, the company indicated that the decline in production levels has made this decision necessary. The actual discontinuation of operations is expected to take place in the third quarter of 2026, as the facility approaches the conclusion of its operational life.

Cheryl Gomez-Smith, the senior vice-president of upstream operations at Imperial, remarked in the announcement, "Today marks the first of many milestones in our closure journey with communities that have been our home for more than a century." She further emphasized the company's pride in its longstanding contributions to the northern economy and reassured stakeholders of their commitment to supporting employees throughout this transition. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of working together with local communities during this closure process.

It's worth noting that Imperial Oil not only engaged in oil drilling but also managed a power plant that supplies electricity to the town of Norman Wells. The company has stated its intention to ensure a seamless transition in power generation for the community, assuring residents that there will be no immediate changes to the existing fuel supply arrangements.

Northwest Territories Premier RJ Simpson responded to the news, acknowledging that it was anticipated given the age of the facility and the ongoing decline in production combined with the current low price of oil. He expressed disappointment over the announcement, particularly as it comes at a time when stability is crucial. "In the immediate period ahead, our focus as a government is on support, certainty and a responsible path forward," he stated.

As for the future, Imperial Oil mentioned that they are in the process of developing a comprehensive closure and reclamation plan for the site. However, any reclamation efforts are not expected to begin until after 2030.

Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving situation.
