But experts say the lessons learned from the Covid pandemic could help ease the strain. A trio of UK-based academics propose a three-pronged approach: increasing flu vaccine uptake, boosting support for home isolation, and improving ventilation and air quality. They argue that these measures, which were partially successful during the pandemic, are crucial to protecting people from influenza. If not implemented, they warn, people will continue to fall ill and die, schools will close, and hospitals will be overwhelmed. The NHS anticipates one of its toughest winters yet, with flu season starting earlier than usual and a new, more contagious strain dominating in some countries, including the UK. However, Prof Stephen Reicher, an expert in social psychology, notes that the situation is not surprising. He explains that while respiratory diseases occur annually, the long-term lessons from Covid on managing these diseases have not been fully embraced. Reicher and his co-authors emphasize the need for increased eligibility for free flu vaccines, engaging vaccine-hesitant individuals, and wider vaccine availability. They also highlight the importance of supporting people to isolate when unwell, noting the stark contrast between Germany's generous sick leave policies and the UK's inadequate statutory sick pay. Additionally, they stress the role of ventilation and good airflow in preventing the transmission of both Covid and flu, citing benefits for health, productivity, and decision-making. The experts urge a shift towards a longer-term perspective in politics, where short-term gains are not prioritized over long-term benefits. They advocate for a sense of partnership between the government and the public, especially during the festive season, where communal responsibility is crucial to preventing the spread of flu and other illnesses.
