The Detroit Lions' already beleaguered secondary might be facing yet another setback in their matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
On December 15, 2025, the Lions took to the field missing their three top safeties and a key starting cornerback. Unfortunately, the situation worsened during their game against the Rams when cornerback Amik Robertson sustained an injury with just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter. This injury occurred while he was attempting to force a fumble during Colby Parkinson’s second touchdown reception, which ultimately pushed the Rams ahead 41-27, sealing the game in their favor.
At the time of his injury, Robertson was deemed questionable to return due to a hand issue. After the game, Head Coach Dan Campbell provided limited information about Robertson's condition, indicating that they would learn more the following day. "I don't have any updates right now," Campbell remarked after the Lions fell to the Rams 41-34. "It’s something related to his wrist or hand."
Post-game observations revealed that Robertson was seen with his hand secured in a brace or sling, leaving uncertainty about the severity of his injury. This development poses a significant challenge for a Lions defense that has struggled immensely in recent weeks, allowing an astonishing 1,812 total yards and 129 points over their last four games.
In a shocking turn of events, the Lions’ defense, which managed to keep opponents under 300 passing yards in their first ten games, has now permitted three such performances within this dismal stretch. Robertson himself has had a particularly hectic season, shifting between various roles on the field. Heading into this latest game, he led the league by allowing the most receptions—50 out of 80 targets in coverage.
Compounding these issues, safety Brian Branch is out for the remainder of the season, depriving the team of one of its most versatile players. Additionally, fellow safety Kerby Joseph is sidelined for the eighth consecutive game following a recent setback. Safety Thomas Harper also missed this game due to a concussion, leaving Avonte Maddox and Erick Hallett II to start, with Daniel Thomas stepping in to provide some variety.
The Lions are also without starting cornerback Terrion Arnold, who is recovering from shoulder surgery. Against the Rams, the cornerback duties fell primarily to D.J. Reed, Rock Ya-Sin, and Robertson, with Khalil Dorsey being the only other cornerback to see action.
In a striking performance, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for an impressive 368 yards and two touchdowns, notably connecting with standout wide receiver Puka Nacua nine times for a total of 181 yards during the game. The struggles of the secondary were apparent, as the season hangs in the balance for the Lions—now facing a critical juncture in their playoff aspirations.
"It's frustrating. Yes, it’s frustrating because I know we’re capable of better than this," Campbell expressed regarding the defensive struggles. "But at the end of the day, the scoreboard reflects what happened, and the opposing team earned their victory."
As the Lions navigate this challenging season, fans and analysts alike are left wondering: can this team recover from these setbacks, or is it too late to salvage their playoff hopes?
