In a significant move that has captured the attention of hockey fans, Josh Doan has officially inked a seven-year contract worth $48.65 million with the Buffalo Sabres. This contract, which averages out to an impressive $6.95 million annually, is set to take effect starting next season.
At just 23 years old, Doan is already making waves as a forward, boasting personal bests this season with 15 goals, 20 assists, and a total of 35 points over 49 games – all during his inaugural season with the Sabres. If not for this extension, he would have been on track to become a restricted free agent at the end of the current season.
Doan was brought into the Sabres organization following a trade from the Utah Mammoth on June 26, where he was exchanged alongside defenseman Michael Kesselring in return for forward JJ Peterka.
Originally selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft (at number 37), Doan has compiled a total of 63 points—comprising 27 goals and 36 assists—over 111 games played with the Coyotes, Mammoth, and now the Sabres.
Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen expressed his confidence in Doan's potential, stating, "Josh is a player that impacts the team both on and off the ice. He works hard, is competitive and skilled, and his game is going to continue to develop. We believe he will be a core piece of this team moving forward, and I am excited to have him as a Buffalo Sabre long term."
As it stands, the Sabres are currently positioned fourth in the Atlantic Division and hold the first wild card spot for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Eastern Conference—a vital position, especially considering they haven't made the playoffs since 2011.
But here's where it gets intriguing: Do you think this hefty investment in Doan will pay off for the Sabres in their quest for playoff success? Share your thoughts below!
