Grocery Savings: Costco's Membership Fees vs. WinCo and Walmart's Low Prices (2026)

Costco's Competitive Edge Fades as WinCo and Walmart Offer Similar Savings Without Membership Fees

The cost of groceries in the United States has been on a steep rise over the past five years. In 2022, the price of food prepared at home surged by a record 11.8% compared to the previous year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index survey.

While inflation for groceries has slowed down since 2022, with prices 2.2% higher in July 2023 than in the same month the previous year, consumers are still seeking ways to save.

A recent study by Consumers' Checkbook, a nonprofit organization, evaluated grocery stores in the Puget Sound area and found that shoppers can save money by choosing low-cost stores.

Researchers used a 150-item shopping list to compare prices and surveyed members to assess product and service quality.

The findings reveal that Amazon Fresh, Grocery Outlet, Walmart, and WinCo offer the most significant savings.

WinCo's prices were approximately 24% lower than the average at other stores, while Grocery Outlet, known for its discounted surplus national-brand products, offered prices about 21% lower than average.

Amazon Fresh and Walmart each had prices about 19% lower than the all-store average.

For a family spending $300 per week on groceries, a 24% price difference translates to annual savings of $3,744.

Other notable stores for price savings include Fred Meyer and Target, with Target's prices about 14% lower and Fred Meyer's prices about 10% lower than the average.

Trader Joe's, known for its quirky and affordable offerings, remains popular, with 75% of survey respondents rating it as 'superior' for overall quality. Its prices were about 12% lower than the all-store average.

However, Whole Foods, once known for its high-quality produce, meat, and prepared foods, has seen a decline in customer satisfaction. Its 'overall quality' score dropped to 53%, and it remains one of the most expensive large chains.

Albertsons, QFC, and Safeway also charge similar prices, with prices one to six percent higher than average, making them 28% more expensive than Amazon Fresh and Walmart, and 37% more expensive than WinCo.

When it comes to quality, the largest grocery chains performed poorly, with only a small percentage of customers rating them as 'superior' overall. Target, for instance, received the lowest score, with only 18% of customers judging it as 'superior'.

Interestingly, the highest-rated stores are small operators like Central Co-op, Metropolitan Market, PCC Community Markets, Thriftway, and Town & Country, which were all rated 'superior' for produce quality and overall quality by over 85% of their surveyed customers.

Despite their high ratings, these small stores charge high prices, with Metropolitan's prices about 29% higher than the all-store average, and Town & Country's prices 19% higher than average.

Within the largest chains, there is minimal price variation between stores.

Costco, once a go-to for savings, has lost much of its price edge compared to local competitors like Walmart and WinCo. Its prices were only 6% lower than WinCo's and 9% lower than Walmart's.

While Costco still offers competitive prices compared to chains like QFC, Safeway, and Target, the $65 annual membership fee may not be justifiable if you're satisfied with the grocery offerings at Walmart or WinCo.

Despite this, Costco continues to earn high customer ratings for the quality of its meat, and Checkbook.org remains a valuable resource for consumers seeking unbiased ratings, advice, and price information.
