On the evening of December 12th, a week ago, Rīga National Zoo welcomed a new addition to its family: a Linnaeus's two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) baby. This little sloth is the first of its kind to be born at the zoo, marking a significant moment in its history. It's a heartwarming story of motherhood, survival, and the wonders of nature.
A Mother's Love
The baby sloth is the offspring of mother Lele and father Lūkass. Lele and her baby have established a safe and calm corner in their exhibit, where they feel most at home. If the baby gets lost, Lele gently guides it back to her belly, ensuring it stays close and safe.

Lele is more active at night, as active as a sloth can be. When the lights are turned off, she goes to feed, and this is when we get to see her in action. It's not yet known whether the baby is a boy or a girl, and this will only be possible to determine in a few months.
